Celebrate Tu Bishvat on Zoom

Friday, January 14, 2022 12 Sh'vat 5782

6:00 PM - 7:30 PMZoom

6:00 pm on Zoom- Racial Justice Shabbat Service & Musical Shabbat Shira. Hear the story of the first women from Africa to win the Nobel Peace Prize from Jen Cullerton Johnson.

This year the Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK) weekend and the Jewish holiday celebrating trees called Tu Bishvat take place over the same weekend in January. As well, it is called Shabbat Shira—the Song of the Sea because it is the Shabbat when we read the narrative recounting the exodus from Egypt and the song the people broke into as they crossed into freedom.

To honor all of these calendar occurrences, we have created a special service and experience. We can connect this Hebrew song of freedom to legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—to work toward a day when all are free.

Jen Cullerton Johnson, will be our guest speaker at services. She is a local educator and author who wrote the children’s book, Seeds of Change about Wangari Maathai, who was the first woman from Africa and environmentalist to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. This books ties together a call for racial and environmental justice—themes from both the Jewish holiday of Tu Bishvat and our American holiday honoring the legacy of Dr. King.

Services begin at 6:00 pm and will be appropriate for families with children.

The author will share the story she wrote and the modern lessons we can glean from it and will be available to sign books after services. Order your own copy of Seeds of Change below!
