Exploring Jewish Identity Today with Rabbi Dan Rabishaw

What does it mean to be a "Member of the Tribe?" - Rabbi Dan Rabishaw

In 1987, American Express taught us "Membership has its privileges."  Is that still true when it comes to being Jewish?  Are we members of a tribe, a people, something else?  Does it bring us great joy and a sense of belonging or does it inflict headaches and fear?  Today, being a "Member of the Tribe" can be seen as a mixed blessing.  On the one hand is the sense of belonging to K'lal Yisrael (the world community of Jews) and the strength it gives us.  On the other hand there may be occasions where we don't want to feel (or be seen) as "so connected.” (This becomes much more complicated when we add the State of Israel to the mix.)

During this 6-week course, we will use classic and modern texts (and other resources) to explore the history, purpose and ongoing implications of Jewish tribal identity in the Torah, our modern American society and Israel - and we will engage the critical issues that arise from our discussion.
