Social Action Committee

The Temple Beth-El Social Action Committee was formed in the fall of 1995. We sponsor many Jewish community based projects, including collecting food and paper goods for the Ark during the High Holidays, raising money for the Ark as part of our Purim Carnival, helping at the Jewish United Fund’s Uptown Café, sponsoring blood drives, and helping our Yad L’Yad partner community in Russia.

Over the High Holidays, we donate hundreds of grocery bags full of Kosher food and paper products to the Ark. We raise tzededakh money at the Purim Carnival. We work at the Uptown Café on six occasions each year, and we sponsor temple wide blood drives.

The Social Action Committee has a long, close relationship with the Jewish community of Yekaterinburg, Russia. We donate money to help sponsor their holiday celebrations, and to purchase a computer used to publish their newspaper “Tikvataynu.” We also arrange donations of reconditioned hearing aids, donations of medicines and vitamins, kippot, and Russian language Haggadot. Our Sunday school children make cards, booklets, Seder place mats, and Ten Commandment booklets, all which are sent to their children. Several children born in Yekaterinburg were named here at Temple Beth-El Shabbat services!

The Social Action Committee looks forward to continuing these activities and has projects in the planning stages with the Robineau Residence of the Council for the Jewish Elderly and projects with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago. Thank you very much for your participation—past, present, and future—in doing these mitzvahs!
